The ground is shifting ...

Contributed by Buzz Trexler - Posted: Maryville April 3, 2008
I returned to my alma mater, East Tennessee State University, a couple of weeks ago to take part in a discussion panel concerning the state Open Records law and open government in general. While there, I also took time to share some thoughts with a couple of classes. I also spent time with a former professor of mine, Dr. Jack Mooney.

One hot topic in the ETSU Mass Communications Department is something we in the media call "convergence." I liken convergence to geologic tectonic plate theory, which explains the movement of plates in Earth's crust and the resulting changes in geologic formations. When plates shift, continental shelves slip, sometimes resulting in the destruction of some geologic formations, while also creating new ones.

With the growth of the Internet, the media landscape has shifted, and is continuing to shift. As with geologic tectonic plates, this is creating friction, and will likely result in some historic editorials voices being silenced through demise, while new ones are being created. The end result may be a mixed blessing for some communities, as newer voices sometimes fail to understand and appreciate the role of an editorial voice; however, it could also be argued that traditional editorial voices sometimes ignore their newer colleagues.

We at The Daily Times embrace the changes brought about by convergence as we are always looking for new ways to communicate news and information within the Blount County market. Because of that, for more than 10 years we have provided news and information on TheDailyTimes.com, adding more content as our readers requested. (Interestingly enough, the first request was from those who wintered in Florida, asking that we publish obituaries and public records so they could keep up with happenings at home while they were away!) As our presence on the Internet has grown, so has the number of visitors to TheDailyTimes.com, likewise the number of ways in which we are presenting news and information, including audio, video, and other digital formats.

We also embrace the many voices that are looking to speak to the issues of the day and have responded with a community journalism site, BlountCountyVoice.com, offering blogs with audio and video capabilities.

Some people fear innovations. Like you, we embrace them.

Stalled Senate bill would allow grocer wine sales

Contributed by Blount Voice - Posted: March 29, 2008
Store Manager Boyce Smith of the Alcoa Wal-Mart said selling wine in grocery stores would benefit consumers. "Our position is really simple," Smith said. "The advantage to putting it in grocery stores is it becomes more available to the general public. It would be a situation where pricing would be impacted because there is probably more strategic pricing in grocery stores than liquor stores. The more people you have selling an item, the better off the consumer is." Currently, only liquor stores are allowed to sell wine. The Tennessee Grocers and Convenience Store Association is pushing the bill. It launched a public relations campaign on March 5 to support the legislation.

The Last Friday Art Walk was started in January to celebrate the arts on the last Friday of every month in Downtown Maryville. What's unique about it is that bars, retail stores, restaurants, theaters and coffee shops participate. Each participating business hosts a "featured artist," which includes all disciplines of art: visual artists, performance artists, actors, writers, dancers, musicians, etc. New artists and new art is required each month, which gives the community a new experience each time they come.

The Times it is changin' ...

Contributed by Buzz Trexler - Posted: Maryville March 27, 2008
After nearly 30 years in the newspaper business, you would think this job would get old.

It doesn't.

Every day offers something new in the Newsroom -- and for a non-medicated ADD professional, that's a good thing.

So, what's changing at The Times? Most of it has to do with our online arena, TheDailyTimes.com, where we provide breaking news updates, RSS feeds, an improved Money section, staff blogs (BlountCountyVoice.com), news video produced by The AP and Daily Times staffers, and much more. In fact, there's too much news and information to list here. So, you'll have to check it out for yourself -- like thousands of others do each day!

In the future, you will see more interaction and coordination between TheDailyTimes.com and our sister site, BlountCountyVoice.com, Blount County's community journalism and blogging site.

Blount County is changing, and we're changing with you.
